Week 32: Practice Breathing
Baby is about the size of Napa cabbage (424mm head-to-heel)
Your baby is practicing breathing movements, inhaling and exhaling amniotic fluid to strengthen the diaphragm and lungs. The toenails are fully formed. The baby can distinguish between sweet and bitter tastes. The bones are fully developed but still soft — the skull bones remain unfused to allow passage through the birth canal.
The baby may push up against your ribs, causing discomfort. You may feel like you can't take a full breath. False labor (Braxton Hicks) may become more convincing. Fatigue is significant — your body is supporting a rapidly growing baby while carrying substantial extra weight.
What is important now
In France, the 3rd mandatory ultrasound is due (weeks 30-35). In Germany, the 3rd screening ultrasound window ends. In Denmark, GP Visit #3 occurs. Many providers begin biweekly visits now. Finalize your birth plan and hospital bag.
Common symptoms
- regular contractions every 10 minutes or less — contact provider immediately
- fluid leaking from vagina — emergency evaluation
Wellness this week.
Nutrition
Lung maturation and energy for final growth
- Vitamin E for lung tissue development
- Continued calcium for bone completion
- Iron for blood production (baby building iron stores for first 6 months)
- Small, frequent meals as stomach capacity decreases
Exercise
Movement
Gentle movement focused on comfort and birth preparation
Sleep
7-9 hours (with expected interruptions)
Position: Left side; pillows supporting belly and between knees
· Sleeping semi-upright can help with both breathing and heartburn
· Prioritize sleep over everything non-essential — you need the rest
Mental wellness
Mindfulness
You are closer than ever. Every day your baby grows stronger. Focus on what you can control: rest, nutrition, and choosing a comfortable environment for birth.
“Your baby is practicing breathing — rehearsing for their first breath of air.”
